Dr. Selim Raihan is a Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and serves as the Executive Director of the South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM). He earned his PhD from the University of Manchester, UK, and sits on the Board of Directors for the Global Development Network (GDN). Additionally, Dr. Raihan is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Manchester and an alumnus of Harvard University’s program on “Cutting Edge of Development Thinking.” With extensive expertise in empirical research, Dr. Raihan’s work spans international trade, economic growth, poverty alleviation, labour markets, macroeconomic policy, political economy, and climate change. He has made significant contributions to applied economics, notably in assessing the impacts of trade and economic policies using country-specific and global Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) models, as well as micro and macro-econometric modeling techniques. Dr. Raihan has over 25 years of teaching experience in international trade, economic modeling, quantitative economics, econometrics, development economics, and poverty dynamics. He has also conducted numerous national and international training programs on economic modeling in countries such as Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Mongolia, Senegal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. His scholarly output includes numerous journal articles, books, book chapters, and working papers, and he is the editor of “Thinking Aloud,” a monthly digest from SANEM. He also regularly contributes opinion pieces to prominent English and Bengali newspapers in Bangladesh. His extensive professional experience includes collaborations with national and international organizations such as the Asian Development Bank, World Bank, UNDP, UNESCAP, UNCTAD, IFPRI, the Commonwealth Secretariat, FAO, European Commission, ILO, IDRC, and DFID. He has led and participated in numerous regional and international research projects on trade and regional integration, with a continuing focus on the political economy of economic issues. His most recent edited volume, “Is the Bangladesh Paradox Sustainable?” was published by Cambridge University Press, further cementing his status as a leading voice in the field of economic development.
