  • Jul 2013 – Dec 2014: Team Leader for Asian Development Bank, Manila. Study on “Roadmap for the South Asia Economic Union”. The study is for the SARRC Secretariat. I lead a team of economists from South Asia contributing chapters on trade liberalisation under SAFTA, services trade, investment, trade facilitation, labour mobility etc. I have contributed five chapters: one on GTAP CGE simulations of different regional integration scenarios in South Asia; one on identification of the priority sectors for fast track liberalisation; one on a critical evaluation of the regional integration in South Asia; one on a critical evaluation of the bilateral FTA agreements in in South Asia; and the final one is on the policy implications. The outcome of the whole exercise is published as volume edited by me and also as a synthesis policy report.
  • Jul 2013 – June 2016: Team Leader for the IDRC, Canada. Research Project on “Changing labour markets in Bangladesh: Understanding dynamics in relation to economic growth and poverty”. This research project will produce 8 technical papers using pseudo-panel data of household survey data in Bangladesh.
  • Jan 2014 – Dec 2016: Team Leader (Bangladesh component) for Swiss National Foundation and World Trade Institute, Bern, Switzerland. Research Project on “Employment effects of different development policy instruments”. The project involves a quasi-experiment on labour market in Bangladesh.

  • Jan 2012 – May 2013: Team Leader for GIZ and SAARC Secretariat. Study on “Non-Tariff Measures in South Asia”. The report was published as a monograph in April, 2014.
  • Jan 2013 – Dec 2013: Team Leader for the DFID, Bangladesh. Study on “Equitable Financing in Primary Education in Bangladesh”. The study has produced three reports: (i) Education Development Index for the Upazillas in Bangladesh using the Principal Component Analysis method; (ii) Analysis of marginalisation in access to education through household survey data; (iii) Analysis of financing in primary education. Jan 2014 – Dec 2014: International Consultant, UNESCAP, New Delhi. Upgrading the Social Accounting Matrix (SAMs) of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the use of these upgraded SAMs in the respective country CGE models to conduct several policy simulations.

The study investigated the relevant political economic issues and estimated the magnitude of tax exemption in the RMG, poultry and wholesale-retail trade sectors in Bangladesh.

Specific tasks included contribution to the Sixth Five Year Plan of Bangladesh, development of a dynamic CGE model and development of macroeconomic framework for the GED of the Planning Commission of the Government of Bangladesh.
