Collaboration: Oxford Policy Management (OPM)
Starting date: December 17, 2025
Completion date: September 17, 2026
Project description: This study aims to explore extreme poverty in Bangladesh from three intertwined perspectives: the socioeconomic dynamics, the impact of climate change, and the political economy behind the persistence of extreme poverty. It will use nationally representative panel data from 2018 and 2023 to track the factors explaining the dynamics of extreme poverty and the emergence of the “new extreme poor” post-pandemic. In addition, the study will assess the causal relationship between climate vulnerabilities and extreme poverty, using geospatial and climate data. Finally, the research will explore the political economy of extreme poverty, analyzing how governance failures and corruption contribute to the persistence of poverty, using a mix of qualitative and quantitative research methods, including FGDs, KIIs, and econometric models.
