Gender Implications of Future of Work in South Asia: The Challenges of Technological Change and Climate Transition in Garment Manufacturing in Bangladesh and India

Collaboration: LIRNEasia
Starting date:  January 14, 2025
Completion date: January 14, 2027

Project description: The global workforce is changing due to digital technologies (automation, and AI) and climate transition or transition to Net Zero production technologies, which bring both opportunities and challenges, especially for women and young people. The proposed project aims to address employment challenges and opportunities arising from these transitions, with a focus on gender equality and inclusion in India and Bangladesh. It will focus on the garment manufacturing sector, which employs a substantial proportion of women in both countries. The project will analyse employment potential and issues in the sector, exploring how digital technologies and the shift to climate transition technologies impact women’s employment, skill demand, and working conditions. The study will employ the Gender Equality and Inclusion (GEI) framework to collect and analyse qualitative and quantitative data through field surveys and secondary sources. The study aims to advance knowledge and support the development of policies that promote inclusive and equitable employment opportunities for women in Bangladesh and India. Additionally, the research seeks to inform policy dialogues, engage key stakeholders, and establish a research network among LMICs to foster inclusive, gender-responsible policies.
