CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Theme: Addressing Risks and Vulnerabilities in South Asia and Path to Economic Resilience

Sub-Themes:
1. Environmental Risks, Vulnerability, and Macroeconomic Stability in South Asia
2. Covariate and Idiosyncratic Shocks: Implications for Poverty and Welfare
3. Economic Shocks, Trade Disruption, and Investment Risks
4. Energy Transition for Green and Resilient Economies
5. Environmental Degradation and Natural Resource Governance
6. Urbanization and Infrastructure Resilience
7. Health Risks and Vulnerabilities under Environmental Stress
8. Education Disruption and Behavioral Adaptation to Risk
9. Financing Mechanism and Building Economic Resilience
10. Fiscal and Monetary Policies for Resilient and Green Economies

The meet will comprise the following events:
a. Research Paper Presentation: Participants will have to write and present a paper on one of the sub-themes listed above

b. Budding Economist: Participants will be tested on their knowledge of well-known economic theories, concepts, and ideas across subfields along with their creativity to apply those concepts to real world problems. Students have to go through a series of selection processes that includes writing an opinion essay, a written examination and attending visual and interview rounds.
c. Quizonomics: Cross-country teams will participate in an economics quiz event.
d. Policy Discussion: Two students from each country will participate in panel discussions on topics related to Risks and Vulnerabilities.

GUIDELINES FOR THE INTERESTED PARTICIPANTS FROM BANGLADESH

Students from universities in Bangladesh must be enrolled in a bachelor’s programme in economics and possess a passport valid until December 31, 2025.
1. Every participant must write a research paper and take part in an additional event (Budding Economist/Economics Quiz/Policy Presentation) which is mandatory.
2. Ten students, one for each subtheme, will be selected to represent Bangladesh at SAESM 2025. From the ten selected students, four will be nominated for Budding Economist, four for the Economics Quiz, and two for Policy Discussion.
3. To apply, applicants must fill up the following form:

DATES TO REMEMBER (Only applicable for Bangladeshi participants)

Submission of the form: July 7, 2025
• Submission of extended abstract: August 31, 2025
• Final paper submission: September 30, 2025
• Final presentation submission: October 30, 2025
• SAESM conference: November 15-20, 2025

Research proposal: You have to apply with a research paper proposal on any of the above-mentioned ten themes which should include an abstract of what you intend to write in the paper, a detailed idea of the methodology and an indicative bibliography. Papers may be an evaluation of issues related to Bangladesh economy (kindly refer to the themes mentioned above), a comparison of Bangladesh with other countries, or South Asia as a whole. Papers can be written using primary survey data / case study / review of the issue / modelling economic theory / econometric tools. The expected standard of the presentations takes into account that the delegates are undergraduates and hence the expected academic excellence and competency is of normal academic standards at the undergraduate level. Thus, while any of the above methodologies may be used, the papers must demonstrate the application of economics knowledge and analysis in addressing the chosen issue.
    • The proposal/paper must be written in English, and the applicant must be fluent in English to present the paper.
    • Co-authored papers will not be accepted.
    • Use of AI is not accepted for the paper. Any abstract written with AI will be disqualified.

Selection Criteria:
• Initial selection will be based on the abstract submitted within July 7, 2025.
• Participants shortlisted from the initial screening will be informed by July 15, 2025.
• The shortlisted participants from the initial screening will have to submit an extended abstract by August 31, 2025.
• The SANEM team will have the final authority to select the participants. The decision of the SANEM team will be final and binding.
