South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) and the Global Development Institute of The University of Manchester are organizing a Report Launch event of GDI-SANEM study on “The COVID-19 Pandemic, Post-pandemic Challenges and Poverty Dynamics in Bangladesh.”

Bangladesh has witnessed remarkable economic growth and development in the last three decades. However, the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by the Russia-Ukraine war and the global energy crisis, has put Bangladesh to the test on several frontiers. There is a growing need to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the post-pandemic challenges on poverty, inequality, employment, education, healthcare, and food security in Bangladesh. Against this backdrop, with fundings from the CLEAR (IDS and FCDO), GDI partnered with SANEM to provide insights into these parameters based on a nationally representative household survey.

During October-November 2023, GDI-SANEM conducted a nationally representative household survey in Bangladesh. The 2023 survey is built on the SANEM-GED household survey convened in 2018 across Bangladesh with 10,500 households from 500 Primary Sampling Units (PSUs). Among the 10,500 households, the survey team was able to reach 8,765 households in 2023. Based on the survey findings, this study provides evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on poverty, education and health, livelihoods and employment, migration and remittances, social protection, food-security, along with shocks and coping strategies of the households.

South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) and the Global Development Institute of The University of Manchester will host a research dissemination event on 28 May 2024 from 11:00 AM to 01:00 PM (GMT+1) at the Arthur Lewis Building, The University of Manchester.

The survey findings will be presented at the event by Dr Selim Raihan, Professor at the Department of Economics, University of Dhaka and Executive Director of SANEM. Professor David Fielding, Professor of Development Economics, GDI, University of Manchester will present the key findings from the technical papers. Professor Sohela Nazneen, Research Fellow, IDS, University of Sussex and Professor Adnan Khan, Chief Economist and Director for Economics and Evaluation Directorate, FCDO will also share their remarks. The session will be chaired by Professor David Hulme, Professor of Development Economics, GDI, University of Manchester.

SANEM and the GDI invite academicians, experts, development practitioners, policymakers, students and all interested individuals to participate in the event. Participants can also join this hybrid event via Zoom. The session will be live on SANEM’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
