2nd SANEM Annual Economists’ Conference held on February 18-19, 2017
SANEM has successfully organized its 2nd Annual Economists’ Conference 2017 on “Managing Growth for Social inclusion” on February 18-19, 2017 at BRAC Centre Inn, Mohakhali, Dhaka.
The Inaugural Session was marked by two keynote speeches by Dr. Siddiqur Rahman Osmani, Professor, Developmental Economics, University of Ulster, UK and Professor David Hulme, Development Studies, University of Manchester, UK and CEO, Effective States and Inclusive Development (ESID) Research Center, University of Manchester, UK.
The two-day conference had 13 sessions in total, 8 sessions on Day 1 and 5 sessions on Day 2. In total, 26 research papers were presented in this conference.
The inaugural session was followed by six parallel sessions on six distinct themes including “Trade and Investment”, “Public Policy”, “Poverty, Inequality and Growth”, “Human Capital Development”, “Sectoral Economy” and “Labor Market”. 18 selected papers were presented in those six sessions. In addition, there was two organized sessions. One is SANEM-ESID Special Session on ‘The Politics of Growth’ and another is High Level Panel Discussion session on ‘Managing Growth for Social Inclusion in South Asia’ where eminent speakers from Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and United Kingdom reflected on critical issues related to the theme of the conference. A special dinner was hosted by SANEM in honor of Professor Rehman Sobhan. During the first day of the conference SANEM also launched a book titled “Let’s think aloud, shall we?” edited by Dr. Selim Raihan, Executive Director, SANEM.
On the second day of the conference there were four organized sessions and another session was held with the paper presentation of 3 budding researchers. The organized sessions were: SANEM-BIGD-IGC Organized Session, SANEM-BIGD-IGC Roundtable Discussion, SANEM-MCCI Organized Session, SANEM-DECCMA Organized Session. The conference ended with a cultural event hosted by the students of Economics Study Center, University of Dhaka, followed by a closing dinner.
